In mid July 2025, tenants of King Arthur Park and Mountain Meadow Estates discovered online, (Berkadia.com), that the mobile home parks were being sold by their landlord, Gary Oakland, CEO of Oakland and Company, based in Billings, MT. Montanan's have seen, time and time again, developers and private interest groups buying up mobile home park communities with more care for profit than the lives of the residents who live there. This leads to rent hikes and displacement of the people and families who have invested blood, sweat, tears, and life savings into their mobile homes.
Through an extensive door knocking campaign, led by the tenants in both mobile home communities, we informed each other of the sale and aligned around the desire to become a Resident Owned Community (ROC). We have sent out a letter to Gary Oakland requesting a chance to collectively buy the land our homes are on with 187 signatures and counting. We formed majority unions in both parks, elected leadership teams in free and fair elections. We held a press conference with representatives from 5/5 Bozeman City Commissioners, 3/3 County Commissioners and 12 other legislatures from Montana who support our vision for our park.

We know this sale has impacts on the broader community. These mobile home communities, with 338 lots combined) offer critical affordable housing to people who work in the Bozeman, Belgrade, and surrounding areas. Below are the signatures of the public support for tenants of King Arthur Park and Mountain Meadows Estates Mobile Home Communities to collectively purchase and own the land under their mobile homes. If we do not get the bid we will need your support in getting the new owner to the bargaining table to negotiate with us. Tenants deserve fair, collectively-bargained leases to ensure tenants are not displaced from rent hikes and redevelopment and that new owners are held accountable to addressing infrastructure concerns in the park.

Keeping King Arthur intact and affordable is an essential priority for this community. That neighborhood has provided affordable housing to working class heroes for decades, and we can't afford to displace our neighbors who make this place their home. I hope with all my heart that we can pull this off together and transition King Arthur to a resident owned community.
— Zach Brown, Gallatin County Commission

This land is already inhabited by families who have called it home for decades, and they deserve to own the land on which they reside. Displacing 338 people who are safely housed into a completely unaffordable housing market would be pure, unabashed greed and cruelty.

This is the last bit of affordable living we have we own these homes we rent the property we all maintain and take care of the property and homes were all a community we all care for one another. Dont take aways these people's homes. These are the people who you all rely on we need to keep our mobile parks and protect them with everything we can.

We have a housing crisis. A collective ownership of mobile home parks is an excellent idea and way for people in those communities to have home security. It is only greed that would have anyone say no to this.

As a private real estate investor and mobile home park owner I had a great experience selling a community to the residents through a resident owned community model. This model offers a win/win opportunity for sellers to receive a fair market price for their property while preserving and protecting vital affordable housing for residents. The opportunity to sell to residents offers an owner the ability to leave behind a legacy of goodwill and self empowerment for residents.

Mobile home residents deserve the same safety and security in their housing as anyone else. Many already own their mobile homes, and are priced out of other housing options in Gallatin Valley. These residents have made their lives in this valley, and have contributed to its growth, economy, and tax base just as anyone else does. They should have first right of refusal when it comes to the land under their homes.
